Beans is an ancient Pictish-Scottish
name. It is derived from the Gaelic word Beathan or betha which
means life. Bean was also the name of a saint in the Breviary
of Aberdeen.
Surname spelling variations include: Bean, Beane, Beyn, Bayn,
Bene, Bane, Baine, Beine, Bayne, Beyne, Been, Beaine, MacBain,
MacBean, MacVain, MacBean, MacVan plus many more.
These folks were
first found in Invernessshire, where they held a family seat
from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest of 1066.
Settlers
in the new country with the name Bains or Beans or its variants
include: Alexander Bean who settled in Georgia in 1775; Duncan
Bean who settled in Jamaica in 1716; Alexander Bain who settled
in Maryland in 1774; John Baine settled in south Carolina in
1716
The Beans of Bucks County, Pennsylvania
descend from William Bean of Wyersdale, Lancashire, England. It
appears evident that his family had immigrated to England from
Ivernesshire, Scotland during the time of the great political
upheaval of the Great Civil War Era. They settled in Lancashire
and lived there until the great Quaker Revivals under William
Penn. William was one of the many converts to the Quaker faith.
It is believed that William Beans never did come to North America.
Close relatives of this line of the Clan MacBean still live in
Lancashire.
Some use the spelling of the name: Bayne or Bayn, or Baine, or
Bane. In North America various spellings of the name are
also used.

· Name: Matthew BEANS
· Sex: M
· Birth: ABT. 1650 in Wyersdale, Lancashire,
England
· Death: 1687 in Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Note: Matthew Bains and his wife Margaret Hatten
who married in England, took passage on "The Chester"
sailing for America. He seems to have used the name Beans and
Bains interchangeably. When his grandchildren came later they
dropped the s and just used Bean. Matthew, his wife Margaret
and two children, Thomas and Timothy died of disease and were
buried at sea. Their daughter Elinor (1677-?) and son William
(1681-1729) survived. She married Thomas Duer/Durr. William's
name for some reason became corrupted into Beans. All of the
children of William, except James, signing it as Beans, though
the children of Joseph and the grandchildren of some other sons
latter spelled it Banes (History of Bucks County, page 722-723).
The genealogy in this text has been compiled by the Clan MacBean
in North America, many contributors who has expanded the records
with Census information, marriage records, death records, and
historical records from various states.
Matthew was a husbandman, ( a farmer). (Source: Wayne Dillon).
The History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Chapter XIII, Southampton,
1703, from the discovery of the Delaware to the present time
by
W.W. H. Davis, A.M., 1876 and 1905 edition.
Davis gives this account of the Mather Baines, descendants of
Matthew Baines, Wyersdale, Lancashire, England, who married
Margaret, daughter of William Hatton, of Bradley.
Children: Thomas, Elinor, Timothy, and Williaim. He says that
Matthew left England with Elinor and William and that he died
at sea.
The Clan MacBean Memorial Park is on Ancestral Land at Dores,
Iverness Shire Scotland. Hughston McBain of McBain is the 21st
hereditary Chief of the Clan. He was matriculated in 1960 and
lives in Tuscon Arizona. A reproduction of his personal Coat
of Arms is included here. His Arms are registered with the Arms
and Bearings of Scotland. The Clan MacBean has a long history
in Scotland. Kindred Clan's are Clan Chattan, Clan MackIntosh
and the oldest traceable dynasty of Europe, the Clan Ui Neill
or Clan MacNeil as known today.

Aaron B. Beans born about 1813 in Virginia
was a laborer. In 1880 he lived in Dunkirk, Hardin, Ohio. both
he and his parents were born in Virginia. He may have been a
descendant of Timothy Beans who moved to Virginia with his wife
Rebecca.
